HALLOWEEN TRAUMA

Mothers should not, I repeat SHOULD NOT, make their children's Halloween costumes. Nor should they be able to accessorize. Let the kids come up with their own attire.

Many moons ago (not long enough to forget) I had wanted to be a brave warrior, one with war paint, a tomahawk, and a feather. Do you see a feather? Do you see war paint? Do I look fierce? Does the ring on my right hand scare you? Does it make me more Native Americanish?

My brother (the old white man/traditional hobo) and I may have scored plenty of candy that year, but at what cost? At what damage to my psyche?

"Trick or Treat!" We'd yell. "Trick or Treat!"

It didn't matter who was behind the door; The reactions were pretty much the same. "Here's a Bit O'Honey for you little man, and here's one for your little sister."

The rabbit's foot around my neck did not bring me one ounce of good luck. Everyone thought I was a squaw! A SQUAW! The make-up on my face didn't help either.

So whats your costume this year going to be?

WOw. Brings back memories for me. I was supposed to be a pirate. Ended up having lots of makeup and the same reaction. Hilarious.
After that, nothing but burnt cork for me. Great post. MW

Poor Jim! If you'd just had a tomahawk and regular clothes, might have had the impact you wanted. Wonder what she was thinking?

I wonder how many of your inmates had Halloweens like that? I can see the headline: "Bank robber blames fairy costume, film at 11"

LOL Could have been worse. :] My brother dressed like a girl one year, he got beat up and they stole his candy. LOL!!!

Cute photo...yeah, you do look more like Pocahontas than Geronimo. Did your mother go to your school, all dressed up, to help out with your Halloween parties? Mine did...and her costumes were a lot better than mine! Embarrassing!

Hahah Jim you make me laugh. "A SQUAW!"

I seriously laughed until tears ran out of my eyes. =D

hahaha! great costume Jim. My mom made my outfit one year but she was so ill it was the only thing she could do. I had a purple winter coat and we went out to the store and bought a whole bunch of puple balloons... me, my brothers, and my mom blew them all up and pinned them to my coat to look like a thing of grapes. I felt like I should be in a fruit of the loom add. But everyone in my neighborhood thought it was adorable and everyone was taking pictures. Unfortunately my mom went in the hospital shortly after so she didnt get any pictures.

You know, without fail whenever I click onto your blog, I burst out laughing at the picture you have posted, even before I read your blog.

Oh, Gawd, the things parents do to their kids. I can't tell, are you smiling in the picture? :-)

I accidentally deleted my blog, but it's back only with a different name. Too many points and clicks.... oops.

Cheers,

Josie

I suppose it doesn't help to say you make a really cute little Indian maiden.

Jim, I can remember the photo well! We always did get a lot of Halloween candy. That was our main goal. I think most of the Halloween outfits that I had was mostly a hobo. Keep smiling! :) --Bro, Ron
p.s. You have a memory like a hawk!

That's great! Maybe mom wished she had a daughter instead of a son, and this was her way of showing it.
