STRAINING (A LOVE POEM)

I could not, for the life of me
give my wife a stone on Sweetest Day
my actions were well intentioned
gallons of lemon water drunk
thinking of better times when I wore
Dick DeBeck's hat
and sung
and danced
until I jarred loose a few sad memories
etched in granite
the pressure never letting go
I memorized my lines
my torso bent
a forty-five degree angle
a pinch of table salt too
thrown over my shoulder
and my wife, my pillar
straightening me out.

WhooHoo! Jim, the poet! I like the 'stones' of sad memories jarred loose, the salt for good luck, and your wife, the pillar. A definite love poem. Like you told me, this adds another dimension to your blog. Now, wasn't that fun? lol Maybe you'll have some stones for Halloween (but hopefully before!) Cheers!

Nice post. Memories cemented or stones through the strainer.
Is that pine tar on your hand or are you just getting a better grip? :-} MW

Jim,

You're a very brave man! Good job on posting the love poem. I'll quote old St. Raymond Carver -- all poems are love poems. Nice work.

You're good at poetry too?

Now I'm starting to get jealous.

I like the poem. Especially the part about your wife, the pillar straightening you out. I can relate to that line.

That's lovely.

What is Sweetest Day? Ellie referred to it as well. I have never heard of it before.

Well Josie, Sweetest Day is an unofficial holiday, mainly in the midwestern states, where you get your sweetheart a sentimental card and a box of chocolate. I believe that sums it up.

Hey, JR!! Thanks for pointing me toward your poems! Now, why on earth would you say they are bad? This is awesome! No, I'm not just saying that to be nice. I love it. I love the pillar of salt at the end, the voice, the lines...and YES, I think this would be great at a slam. Post some more!
