My mother-in-law always comes over for Halloween; It's tradition. She likes to give away our candy and comment on the various costumes. She even dresses up Charlie, her travel companion dummy. "He's a witch this year," she says enthusiastically."That's nice," I yawn.
In case you didn't know, I'm really not into the whole ghosts and goblins begging for candy at my door routine. I'd rather spend a quiet evening watching television, uninterrupted.
"You just missed the cutest little Elephant. He was adooorable, just adooorable."
My wife approaches and joins in, "Awwwh, look at the little Batman coming up the driveway."
"Hmmm," I say from the couch, ready to grab the t.v. remote and turn up the volume. I wish they'd sit on the porch, keep the door closed. I'm not trying to heat the outside.
So goes my night. Not all of their comments are favorable. My mother-in-law complains about a gaggle of teenagers breaking with tradition--no "trick or treat," no costumes, just pillow cases thrust forward waiting for some candy. As they walk down our driveway, my mother-in-law says, "They didn't say thank-you. I should've told them 'no costume, no treat.' They're too old to be trick or treating, don't you think? They should be at a Halloween party or passing out candy at home."
"How about a trick?" I ask. My wife and mother-in-law nod in agreement. I hit the key fob to my mother-in-law's van. Someone yells, "Jesus!"

Jim, This is so funny, I'm laughing my butt off! I definitely could see how "Charlie" would scare the heck out of someone once you hit the key fob. Charlie looks like a real person. Maybe next time you could integrate some makeover voices and that would really scare the pants off the unwanted trick or treaters. Hopefully you stayed warm on the bench. --Bro, Ron

I remember Charlie from another great post, as well! My husband & I sat on the porch last night and handed out candy, drinking hot cups of coffee. When we went inside, my 12 yr. old daughter decided to come out, wearing fangs and lots of scary makeup and scared a little girl into screaming when she reached into the bowl... We're still wondering if we'll get a call from the child's mother today! lol
hahaha Charlie is cool! I dresses up as an evil enchantress with Jewels lining my eyebrows and an upside down triangle between them. it was cool.
Charlie is cool, witch or not! As for children, well, that's not the fun part of Halloween except when you scare them. Candy is another story!

I like Charlie. I love watching the little kids come by the house in their Halloween costumes, but what is up with those teens in no costumes wanting candy. We had some at our house too. Sheila was passing out full sized candy bars to the trick or treaters, but when these huligans came up to our door without costumes, this sweet little girl just gave them the tiniest box of Mike and Ikes I've ever seen. After they walked away, Sheila stated to me, "They didn't even take the time to dress up, they don't deserve full size candy bars".
I am trying to get this..and I can be a little slow...so Charlie is your mother in law's travel companion? He goes with her wherever she goes? I may have to get a Charlie too...I like the idea of having a companion sitting there with me so I could talk to him on the way home.

This one cracks me up. Too funny. My poor little neighbor, a grade school teacher, still rides with her little inflatable buddy -- it may be her closest friend, sadly enough. Then again, her mother lives right across the street, so. . . I'm sure she's not starved for company.
