Back when I was still a guppy in the prison system and inmates were allowed to wear their own clothing, I had a gay tutor show up in a 70’s style red satin running shorts. I also noticed that his head, eyebrows, arms, and legs were shaven. As soon as he approached my desk, I told him he couldn’t stay, quoting the “no shorts allowed” school rule. I don’t think I over-reacted; at least not like in a Tim Hardaway fashion. I never commented on his sexual orientation, even though he did make me uncomfortable. I thought he was drawing too much attention to himself, that he might cause a situation I wasn’t necessarily prepared to handle. I don’t consider this being homophobic on my part; I consider this being, more or less, reasonable. In prison there are folks that only think about one thing—S.E.X.
I’ve overheard inmates readily admit that they aren’t gay because they’re not on the receiving end of things. “I’m doing all day,” I had a lifer tell me, “does it look like I care what others think?” Then after a slight pause, he’d add, “But I’m not gay.” Also, around that time, I remember students concealing pornographic magazines behind their GED books. I hadn’t thought much about it until a female teacher mentioned how distracting it was. I told her I’d look into it. I had learned that convicts could purchase a dinner and a date (in prison terms this meant a bag of chips and pop, a piece of rolled-up meat in a fefe can, and a palm magazine) for a very affordable price. It sounded kind of ridiculous to me. I suppose a guy has got to have some type of outlet or fantasy or whatever the hell you want to call it while locked up.
As for the porno mags in the classroom, I discovered that a Chaledean inmate was renting out this material per each class session for the price of one stamp. “Look,” I told him, “I’m going to ask you nicely to peddle your wares some place else.” He understood, and his clients either did a better job of hiding their rental magazines, or he changed his business model.

Morning JR! Hope you had a good weekend!! This "renting out" books is a good bussiness. I worked at a truck stop 10 years ago. And we did not have a liquer licence.. But the truck drivers love to stop over for the weekend and but some meat on the fire... I had a bar in my room... where you could buy what ever you like.. Plus I had a library, where you bring you old book in pay me R1-00 and take another book. I made losts of money. The trick is to see where the gab in the market are :-) Ok I agree, the books are..... but who cares!!! Ok they drive while reading the books - ok maybe that was not such a good idea... oops!!!
Well I guess everyone anywhere needs to do what they need to do.
Weird tough......
I'm starting to think if you hang around that place long enough, you'll be taking to the sheets, man.
I know where you're coming from regarding the gay tutor - you didn't over-react, as he must have realised that a certain percentage might be titilated, and he wasn't focused on the job. Nothing to do with orientation...
Well they are only human...
Jim, We're all human beings! It only comes natural! Nice photo of Mariah. The date looks new. Looks like you recieve a natural magazine yourself??? --Bro, Ron
Bro Ron,
Believe it or not, I read it for the fiction. I have to study the market you know.
Hey Ivan,
Careful man. Especially when all eyes are on you.
"I read it for the fiction" --of course you do ;-)
Come back by my blog today--installment 4 is up--
Ever see a syzygy spit?
It's like a chimaera, but in astronomy, it's an alignment of three bodies...
Ivan
At least I feel better about myself now.
Thank you for making me feel better about teaching alternative education.
I love the description of the prisoner -- great details! As for pornos, I've had students bring me Playboys "for the stories." Sometimes they are nice enough to cut around the "titty" pictures as one referred to them. It made me laugh -- I assured him I'd seen worse!
i guess it couldnt be controlled, sex,in or out of prison? :)
happy monday,JR!
When I was locked up I got tired of my "roommate" trying to sneak into bed with me whilst I was sleeping.
So I told the powers that be that I was a lesbian. Led to me getting my own 'room', which was exactly what I'd hoped.
As for girlie mags, I saw my first porn layouts around age 10. The groundskeeper at a YMCA type place down the street had salvaged a box from the dumpster. He gave me a few. Not really sure why. He was about 60, probably.
Never tried to put the moves on me, but looking back, I think he's lucky I didn't tell anyone about that, lol.
I to teach in the prison system. Without a doubt, it is an extremely interesting and challenging profession. If only the inmates could channel their entrepreneurship and creative talents to do good!!!!

Hey Jim and all, very interesting. There are some sheepish jokes about prison "dates" on The Sopranos from time to time. As for dressing in an interesting fashion, there's a teacher at a certain community college who does that, but after a while nobody seems to care. And the students there, well. . . . .
Cheers, 'E
Interesting post!!! Its all about SEX
JR. I agree with Ivan. You are only an arms length away from a "table party." Great post and comments by all. MW
Necessity is the mother of invention. When your normal sexual outlets aren't available to you, you'll turn to whatever or whomever will satisfy the need.
Rental porno mags. That's the coolest thing I've heard about in awhile.
"Dinner and a date"
Classic.
Wow, as the front of the Playboy magazine says, "Hot for Teacher". I think David Lee Roth sang that before with Van Halen.... Cool stuff my man.
Haha, interesting picture. Interesting post.
Hi,
I came upon your site via "India, the Hippie Chick"'s blog
(lux-lumen.blogspot.com). I so enjoyed reading your posts. Growing up, I had always wanted to work in the prison systems - as a psychologist.
I did end up with a psych. degree, but never did make my way into the fascinating world of prisons.
Thanks for sharing this part of your life.
~ Linds
working in a prison is hard. I can only imagine some of the things that are seen and heard.
JR, your pictures always crack me up.
In prison there are folks that only think about one thing - S.E.X. Ha! It's good to see the inmates are only human.
Josie
