TOUCHING THE MOON

When confronted with his misconduct the psychopath has enough false sincerity and apparent remorse that he renews hope and trust among his accusers. However, after several repetitions, his convincing show is finally recognized for what it is—a show.

Nearly every type of treatment method has been tried with the psychopath. In general, the treatment . . . has not been rewarding or enlightening.

—Richard M. Suinn, “Fundamentals of Behavior Pathology”

In my world, regardless of the circumstances—whether it is a monumental task such as landing on the moon or something more routine such as tying shoelaces—failure will always be an option. I see it every day in the sunken eyes of murderers, rapists, and thieves, their transparent faces, those masks of invincibility, worse than any dollar-store panty hose they may have pulled over their heads.

After they’ve told me what they can do, I sit back and wait and in no time at all I feel the ripple effect caused from the blame-game. “It’s your fault I didn’t succeed,” or something of that nature. As if I deliberately stuck a defective rocket booster under their asses.

But don’t think you’ll clear up any misunderstandings, don’t think for a second you’ll be able to say, “You learn with your ears and not with your mouth.” Such canned statements are devoid of passion; they will spurn arguments faster than any blast-off ever would; besides, my ears are backed-up and my throat is unbearably sore—sure signs of weakness, of a communication breakdown.

Truth be told, I haven’t been to work in three days because I’m sick as hell. I’m sure I’ll hear about it from the inmates when I return, especially since a coworker informed me that only thirteen out of thirty-one students passed their GED Exams. But for now I need my rest … and a doctor’s note. Cause of illness: Wife forgot to give me a dollop of Purell after I touched the moon.

Such is the story of Tony Soprano and his "colleagues."

Evil is more than a feelng -- (proposed song title)

I touched the moon at Kennedy Space Center in FL. Loved it. I was also fortunate enough once to hold a meteor that was older than Earth. It made me feel very small, much like the Niagara gorge does, but x10,000.

Feel better soon!

I really like the line about the "Dollar store pantyhose." And that quote about psychopaths is right on. Hard to believe folks who can't take any responsibility.

But you have had so much more. Stick with the codine and zinc cough drops. They should help also. Just think, I gave two weeks feeling like you do now to test those bastards. It is worth it. 13 made it and have a light turned on. I'll take them from here. Thanks for your efforts, and I hope you feel better soon.

I'll echo what the others said, that there were 13 successes, and for that, you should be proud.

Interestingly enough, I had one of my students fail recently while attempting a first captaincy.

Here was a normally high-achieving individual, educated, motivated, never been to prison, but the failure was everyone else's fault: The circumstances. The weather. The training methodology. The testing methodology. The instructors. The airplane itself... Nothing was her fault...

One of the qualities I notice in an individual is the ability to say "I screwed up." It's an admirable ability.

"their transparent faces, those masks of invincibility" sometimes playing at invincibility is worse than being vulnerable.

13 of 31 that percentage about equals the graduation rate of highschool around here.

Try a hot shower a quickly drunk pint of brandy and bed with as many covers on as it takes you to sweat it out.

Be better Jim

Who knew the moon could be such a contaminant?

My own eclectic research shows psychopaths make excellent entrepreneurs and politicians.

I mean, look at Canada and its go-around with one Mr. Muldoon, a former prime miniseter.
Accusations of hand in the till. Hand in the till.
