Can it be true? And just in time for Thanksgiving? I’m thinking “Buy Out.” Wife’s telling me to report to personnel after the holidays. Last time I dealt with the personnel department, they were campaigning to have me escorted from the prison grounds for what they thought was an expired teaching certificate (you can’t always believe what you read—especially if it’s from a website that hasn’t been updated in months. Incidentally, I update my blog on a semi-regularly, non-intermittent basis).
But this is different … or maybe not. Maybe it’s a subtle hint for me to “push-on.” I’m examining what appear to be official looking documents sent by the State of Michigan Civil Service Commission. There’s an application too, with an assigned policy number. It says:
Dear JR,
As an eligible State of Michigan defined benefit retiree, you are being given an additional opportunity to apply for Retiree paid Benefits …
What does this mean? I’m too young to be mistaken for a retiree. I’m not even a half-century old. Is this the State of Michigan’s way of chipping away at my future pension? I need to start planning. I need to investigate what type of shenanigans the Civil Service Commission is up to. I need to do it now. I need to crunch the numbers. Or perhaps I’ll wait; perhaps I’ll do it during the Detroit Lions’ Thanksgiving Day football game. At least some things never change.

sounds like they are up to something, but see what they have to offer. I'm sure it won't be enough.
Have a great Thanksgiving JR, and do love your blog but am a bad commentator I'm afraid.
Some things do change -- the Lions win every once in a while these days ;-> (And the last one really was exciting).
If they offer you early out, do it! And write on, man, write on, no matter what.
Happy Thanks giving ....
If it's voluntary Jim stay the hell away from it, continue to accrue your pension until you have your full time in.
I hope it is a buy out offer. Sometimes a buy out is the push you need to move on. Trust me I know. Thank you Generous Motors. Take the money and run. We could really use some good math teachers on the west side. If you need to commute like I did, I have a spare guest room in the basement. It is finished and nice. You can always play air hockey or ping pong to keep you busy. When I was offered the money, I took it and never looked back. Best move ever. Well....second best move ever. The best was escaping the midgets and her flunky. Have a great Thanksgiving.
It's a nice way of saying, they want your ass out!!! Preparation is a good thing, but not sure if you could of prepared for this. No one is ever safe these days even if they think they are! Good luck on your new job!
Hope it works out to your satisfaction, Jim. Happy American Thanksgiving. :-)
Time to start a second career as a famous writer!
JR-I agree with Erik. Just make that thing work. In your leisure time, maybe we can get a walk together on the path sometime?
Try googling something from the "form" & add "scam" or "fraud" when you search. You'd be surprised what can come up on Google.
