Level IV, II, I

“So,” I interrupt, I’m dealing with a surly prisoner’s temper tantrum, “are you a ‘true’ Level II or an ‘actual’?”

He knows what I’m getting at. IV’s and II’s refer to security levels; the higher the Roman numeral, the bigger the risk factor. A ‘true’ security level is where an inmate is ‘supposed’ to be; it’s based on a classification point system determined by the type of crime committed, staff assaults, tickets, and so forth; whereas, an ‘actual’ security level is determined by bed space. If a facility’s Level IV cells are at capacity, an inmate is placed at a lower security level, allowing him more access, more freedoms within the confines of the prison environment.

Level I’s are supposedly less of a threat. They sometimes work jobs out in public.

Two days ago a corrections officer supervising Level I prisoners on a work crew (roadside work) was stabbed with a pitchfork and left for dead. His assailant made a short-lived getaway in a state van full of his peers. The corrections officer is currently in the hospital. Everyone in the Michigan Department of Corrections is praying for his recovery.

“So,” I remind my student, “what’s your ‘true’ security level?”

“It doesn’t matter,” he shouts. “I’m going home!”

Just hold the door open for him old bean.

You ain't a security guard you're a teacher.

Hold the door open and wave bye bye - let those that do it catch him again.

You bloody well be careful out there....

“Level I’s are supposedly less of a threat.” Supposedly being the key word.
I hope the officer is okay.

Do they let the CO's have a gun while they are supervising the road gangs? In VA one guard with a shotgun over his shoulder was enough.

I guess the level I won't be going home anytime soon. Lock 'em all down until February.

I'm not sure any human is a true level 1.

A pitchfork eh? ouch!

Those guys were captured about fifteen miles from my house. They said he was trying to get to his ex girlfriend's house who wrote him a "dear convict" letter the week before. I'll bet she's glad they caught him, about a quarter mile from her house in a field under some brush. I guess that is where you would expect to find an animal.

Woodman,
I'm hearing conflicting reports of whether ALL the Level I inmates were involved, or whether it was just one convict - the guy you mentioned. Keep me posted.

Walking Man,
I'm not sure why this corrections officer was supervising these guys by himself. The MDOC should have two officers supervising Level I prisoners on a work detail. I'm sure there will be a procedural change now that the fox is in the proverbial chicken coop.

JR-Now that is 'truly' scary!

The news here says he is the only one. They say the others were locked in the back of the van. He refused to lock up in the van, assualted the C.O. and took off. Basically taking the others hostage on his joy ride. This is according to the news. They said when they caught up with the van the others were still locked in there and he ran off. The dogs got him. Who knows how accurate the news is, but that is what they are saying. The guys was only doing three years. What an idiot.

I forgot. They also said he was going to get his ex girlfriend. He was mad at her. They didn't say what he was going to do to her, I can only imagine. It was nothing good. If he had waited a week or so, Jenny probably would have let him out with the rest.

That is terrifying. I just read an article that lists the "Top 10" most stressful jobs in the US during 2009. I instantly thought of you. But the list was ridiculous, because dangerous jobs, including prison jobs, law enforcement, firefighters, and military, were not on their list. They actually had "account executive" on there. Whatever. I'm sure account executives are stressed out, but it seems to pale in comparison to what you do.

I appreciate you, JR, even if the so-called experts don't.
